Pianist/songwriter RJ and his band The Assignment—Julian Tanaka (saxophone), Terry Wesley (drums), Jason Bolden (electric bass), Mariko Kitada (acoustic bass) and Jocelyn Winston (vocals)—offer a compelling listening experience with their second album, The Stroke of Midnight. Lead by RJ’s church-bred piano prowess, this album offers an eclectic mix of original jazz influenced instrumental compositions, dynamic vocal performances in covers of popular songs, and poignant spoken word performances. One particular stand out is “Come Together,” a song made famous by The Beatles, arranged and covered by RJ & The Assignment with lead vocals by the group’s superb vocalist Jocelyn Winston. Overall, The Stroke of Midnight offers an intriguing blend of jazz, gospel, R&B and soul and is worth checking out.
