The pan-African supergroup Les Amazones d’Afrique are back with Amazones Power, the sequel to their widely acclaimed 2017 debut, Republique Amazone. Formed in 2014 by three Malian music stars and social change activists, the group has been known for their fearless confrontation of women’s oppression and inquality through music. On Amazones Power, Les Amazones d’Afrique brings together 16 talented West African musicians that are committed to feminist activism.
While the focus of the artists may be on the activism, with songs addressing an array of hard-hitting issues like misogyny, forced marriage, and female genital mutilation, the music doesn’t fall by the wayside. The album beautifully combines pan-African styles and collaborative harmonies with gritty, contemporary pop. The women of Les Amazones d’Afrique each contribute strong vocals to the 13 tracks, alongside featured musicians like Malian rap star Ami Yerewolo and Beninese vocalist Fafa Ruffino.
Amazones Power is a powerful album created by musicians and activists who recognized the universality of oppressive systems affecting women and girls across Africa. Their purpose is strikingly conveyed through the sweet, strong harmonies of their international voices.
